Treating bruises: follow these tips to relieve your symptoms

Whether at home or playing sports, we have all suffered a blow that resulted in a bruise. Depending on the severity of this contusion, different symptoms may appear and it is often necessary to start treatment to regain normal mobility. Next, we will tell you everything about this damage that our skin suffers.

Main symptoms of a concussion

What is a concussion?

According to the Royal Spanish Academy, A contusion is the damage that some part of the body receives from a blow that does not cause an external injury.. In clinical terms, contusion is a physical injury to tissue that generates a hematoma (ecchymosis) without breaking the skin.

Bruises on the body are caused by blows (direct or repeated) against a hard surface. Their severity will be determined by the force of the blow and the damage generated in the body will depend on this.

In the case of The simplest bruises, only superficial, take about a week to heal.. Instead, A severe bruise can take weeks or even months to heal.. In any case, because it is a closed injury, it does not present risks of external contamination or infection.

Types of bruises

Although we talk about muscle bruises, we must keep in mind that this damage can also affect other organs and/or bones. In these terms, we can differentiate four types of bruises depending on the severity and danger of injury:

  • Simple contusion: It is light, reddens the skin slightly and does not cause major damage. The individual may feel immediate mild pain and the bruise heals in just a few days.
  • First degree contusion: The skin ecchymosis is somewhat larger and makes the skin a little redder compared to a simple bruise since larger blood vessels break in the affected area.
  • Second degree contusion: In this case, not only does the skin become more red, but inflammation may also appear due to excess fluid that generates a hard lump (extravasation), which produces stronger pain.
  • Third degree contusion: The blood vessels suffer deeper damage and therefore can affect internal organs and/or bones. Third degree contusions are typical of traffic accidents.

Tips to relieve bruise symptoms

Main symptoms of a concussion

The main symptoms of a muscle contusion are:

  • Pain in the affected area
  • Redness in the part of the skin that was hit
  • Swelling (or lump) generated by blood extravasation
  • Hematoma due to rupture of blood vessels.

Areas of the body are more prone to bruises

There are some parts of the body that are more prone to bruises than others. The knees, for example, are prominent and poorly protected, making it easy to impact them. The same thing happens with the hands, which serve as support when we are about to suffer a fall. In the case of children, hitting the head is common since it has greater weight compared to the rest of the body, which generates instability.

Although any part of our body can suffer a bruise under any circumstance, there is no doubt that The most common muscle bruises occur in the knees, hands and head. In turn, there are factors such as age, strength or the presence of diseases that can be decisive for the appearance and/or healing of a hematoma.

Another of the factors that cause bruises In specific areas of the body it is the practice of sports, mainly contact ones. Contusions in athletes are the main cause of injuries, followed by muscle strains.

In the case of soccer players, most bruises occur on the ankles, knees and the rest of the legs. In turn, boxers are more likely to suffer bruises on the face and hands. For their part, the rugby injuries due to contusion are more common in the upper extremity.

What is a contusion?

How to differentiate a bruise from a fracture?

The clearest evidence is that most fractures involve visible bone deformity, while contusions do not. The pain of contusions also progressively improves with rest, while the pain in fractures is constant and intense.

If you have a fracture, movement is completely limited in the affected area and is often accompanied by deeper bruising.

Likewise, to rule out any doubt, it is best to have an X-ray or other diagnostic imaging test performed at a specialized center.

Tips to relieve bruise symptoms

Before learning to relieve symptoms, we must first take the necessary precautions and learn how to avoid the appearance of bruises. Using equipment when practicing sports such as shin guards, knee pads or a helmet, or putting protection on the corners of tables in homes where there are children, can save us a lot of trouble.

How long does it take for a bruise to disappear depending on its severity?

Bumps can always happen and in those cases (except the mildest ones), it is best to start treatment. In the case of simple bruises, it is not so necessary to treat them since the human body itself will make the bruise disappear in a matter of days.

But if the redness is a little greater and there is mild pain, you can use a treatment to relieve bruises through the application of ice or cold compresses to improve inflammation. It is also advisable to rest the area until the wound finishes healing.

In more extreme cases, when the contusion is generated by a strong blow and generates a larger hematoma (third and fourth degree contusions), it is advisable to go to a specialist so that a clinical diagnosis can be made and the most appropriate treatment indicated. Since these blows can affect organs and/or bones, Some patients with bruises may require medication, physical therapy, and even surgery..

What ointments or medications help with a bruise?

The most important thing is always to consult a specialist and not self-medicate, although the most common approach in these cases is to resort to topical anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or diclofenac gel.

Ointments containing devil's claw, arnica, or menthol reduce bruising and also improve local circulation. For moderate pain, oral NSAIDs may be used, always under medical supervision.

Rehabilitation exercises that can help improve a bruise

The most important thing is to avoid stiffness and perform progressive, pain-free, and gentle strengthening exercises to restore muscle function. Controlled stretching also helps prevent post-contusion contractures.

Electrotherapy and massage therapy are often quite effective in improving circulation, and if you're a professional athlete, it's important to have a personalized functional rehabilitation plan before returning to your regular high-performance activity.

  1. Good morning, cordial greeting from Cartagena Colombia,
My saucepan is something special, on January 16, 20223, I had a motorcycle accident where my right leg, thigh, knee suffered a skin cut, generating a deep wound without damage to tendons, fractures or arteries.
For this one, I received emergency care from a trauma clinic in the city of Cartagena, Colombia.
procedure received, surgical wash. plus debridement, on the right thigh, knee and leg + drainage, hematoma on the right thigh and knee,
diagnosis CONTUSION OF THE RIGHT KNEE.
This washing and debridement procedure became repetitive since the knee area filled with fluid. I underwent 6 kisses for the same reason. I understand the term contusion, its severity and the type of contusion, mine is third degree because it is traffic accident at the end
and I consider that in my case I have not received the proper procedure, since I always had bleeding, that was the liquid that was always drained. They placed elastic bandages on me, some tighter, others less so,
Currently, as of today, June 26, 2023, I received a new procedure, elsewhere another medical concept. I have been recovering for a month and a few days much better but I still have stiffness on the side of the knee where exactly I have the hematoma, the edema or what for me is still a knee contusion since there is a reddish color with slight pain, discomfort in the knee, inflammation , it does not present coldness or temperature, I cannot pick up or flex my knee, a lump appears on the side, when I go to bed awake, the inflammation is reduced but when I walk the stiffness in the knee is felt as if the skin was stretched. When I sit down I see the inflammation next to my knee, when I stand I see the inflammation again but it is softer and does not last. It scares me that it is still liquid due to bleeding from the blood vessels, that the skin is at risk of deterioration or death from so much manipulation, this wound is 30 centimeters, deep, which leaves a pocket or capsule which fills with liquid. diagnosis, delivered by doctors. The wound continues to heal slowly but normally. background I am a reindeer monkey with only one kidney due to hydronephroccis laparoscopic operation I am hypertensive older adult 55 years old I take losar tan for the pressure of 100cc anodipine to strengthen, forgotten they sent me thigh strengthening therapies which made me worse instead of better since it I fill my pocket more with liquid... currently the last procedure is a month and 7 days old, I have authorized 45 sections of sedative physiotherapies and mobility prayers in my right knee and thigh. Any help, recommendation, observation is important to me.
    stay tuned
    greetings

It is normal for your elbow to still hurt and make noise when you move it after a severe bruise, even after 10 days. However, if the pain persists or worsens, or if you have limited movement, I recommend that you see your doctor again for further evaluation.

What could you please recommend and what should I know so as not to worry about the recovery and therapies I can do? To tell you, we would have to do a physical examination and see the imaging tests, and request other complementary tests if necessary.
Without that information, we cannot make recommendations that are professional and appropriate. It is difficult to resolve cases through a comment since we are missing a lot of data about the patient and their medical history.

Thank you for sharing your question. What you describe could be related to a sequel of the trauma suffered during the accident, such as chronic inflammation or the formation of a residual hematoma that has not completely disappeared, among other pathologies. It is important that a specialist evaluate you to determine the exact cause and rule out possible complications.

We recommend that you see a traumatologist so that he or she can perform a physical examination and, if necessary, imaging studies to obtain an accurate diagnosis and establish the appropriate treatment.

    • Hi, Diana,

Although you were initially diagnosed with only a fractured finger and a small shin splints, the symptoms you describe—persistent pain, numbness in your leg, ankle swelling, and spider veins—may indicate that there are side effects or complications that need to be evaluated.

It is not usual for such severe pain to persist after 19 months without any changes or complications. Therefore, I would recommend that you consult with a traumatologist, so that they can perform a complete evaluation and determine the cause of these symptoms and establish the appropriate treatment.

I am sorry to hear that you are still experiencing pain after all this time. In some cases, if proper rest is not taken, recovery can be delayed, and the area may still be tender. However, to determine if there is something else affecting recovery, our specialists should evaluate you and check the affected area. It is important that a doctor assess your situation more accurately and, if necessary, perform additional studies. We recommend that you schedule a consultation to obtain a detailed evaluation and to know what steps to take for your recovery.

I had an accident and received a strong blow to my left cheekbone; the swelling was considerable, they did tests and concluded that surgery was not necessary… they prescribed me anti-inflammatories. After about 22 days and finishing the treatment, my cheekbone is still swollen and hard…
What do you suggest as a path to follow?

    • Hello Martin,

Although blows to the cheekbone area can cause inflammation and hardening, it is important to keep in mind that recovery can vary from case to case. If inflammation and hardening persist after finishing treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs, we recommend consulting a specialist for a more detailed evaluation.

More specific follow-up may be needed to check if the inflammation is part of the healing process or if it requires any additional treatment. Additional studies may also be helpful to rule out any other conditions that are delaying recovery.

If you wish, you can schedule an appointment with our specialists so they can evaluate your case and determine the necessary studies.

    • Hello, Teresa,

In some cases, deep hematomas may take several weeks to reabsorb, especially if there was a strong impact. However, if swelling persists after a month or there is severe pain, it would be advisable to have your case evaluated by a specialist to rule out possible complications, such as an encapsulated hematoma or a muscle injury.

In the meantime, applying cold in the early stages helps reduce inflammation, but after so much time, moderate heat can promote circulation and reabsorption of the hematoma. It is also important to avoid hitting the area and, if there is discomfort when moving the leg, consult a doctor for a more precise evaluation.

    • Hello Soly,

Bruises after a blow can spread downward due to gravity, which explains why the purple color has spread from the knee to the ankle. This is a common process in the resorption of the bruise and usually resolves over time.

However, if you notice excessive swelling, changes in skin temperature, or discomfort when moving your leg, it would be advisable to have your case evaluated by a specialist to rule out other injuries. If you need a more detailed assessment, you can schedule an appointment with our specialists by calling +34 910 005 39 00.

I thought it was healing and again it went back to the same thing. Now the scab has come off and the blood from the wound is purple. At night, I'm feeling like my leg is getting hot and it hurts a lot when there is pressure or a slight rubbing of the garment. I would like to know what specialty to go to.

    • Hello Selena,

We're sorry you're going through this. The symptoms you describe, such as persistent pain, a bruise that continues to develop, and a feeling of warmth, may indicate a wound-related complication or possible infection.

We recommend that you visit a traumatologist or a general medicine specialist for a complete evaluation, as it is important to perform a physical examination and, if necessary, additional tests to determine the appropriate treatment and avoid further complications.

It is essential that you follow medical recommendations and do not ignore persistent pain.

      Greetings.

  33. My 1 year and 2 month old granddaughter fell off her chair, approximately 60 cm high, on her head. A lump appeared on one side. We took her to the pediatrician and he said that if she spends 24 hours without vomiting or fainting, it is not serious. Is that right?

    • Hello,

We're sorry your granddaughter had that fall. It's very important to follow your pediatrician's instructions, but if she doesn't show any symptoms such as vomiting, loss of consciousness, or changes in behavior within the next 24 hours, it's a good sign that she hasn't suffered a serious injury.

      Greetings.

  34. Hello, good morning my dear specialist doctors, I would like to tell you that a month ago I had a motorcycle accident and a muscle tore on the inside of my right ankle. I had suturing because there was no fracture or fissure, but that is now fine. The problem is that I have a hematoma that was black and greenish on the outside of my tibia, but then it went down with massages, but now it is smaller and has a bright red to purple color and is making it difficult for me to walk. I am hoping for your help, thank you.

    • Hello José Eugenio,

Thank you very much for your message. Regarding the hematoma you mentioned, it's normal for the color and tenderness to change during the resorption process, but if after several weeks it's still present, painful when walking, or has a bright reddish color, it would be important to have it evaluated in person to rule out complications such as persistent swelling, an encapsulated hematoma, or a vascular problem.

  35. Hello, 7 days ago I fell and hit my hand. My thenar eminence became quite swollen, and I bruised. Now I can move my hand, but it's still limited in some areas. Especially when I close my thumb, the bruise has gotten bigger, and it's still swollen, although a little less. Is it normal for the swelling and some pain to persist?

    • Hello Viviana,

Thank you for sharing your story. After a severe blow to the hand, it's common for swelling and bruising to take several days to improve, and some movement may remain limited while the tissues heal. However, if swelling persists or pain doesn't subside, or if you notice that movement remains severely limited, it may be important to rule out a deeper injury, such as a sprain or fracture. It would be advisable to consult a specialist for a proper evaluation.

      Greetings.

  36. Hello, good afternoon, Doctor! Three days ago, I abruptly twisted my foot outward. I felt severe pain for the first few minutes; then it continued to hurt, but it was tolerable. While I'm resting, I don't feel any discomfort. I can move my foot and toes almost without difficulty, but the side of my foot hurts a little when I walk. The area where I twisted the foot is swollen, and there's a purplish bruise on four toes (except the thumb). The swelling has been going down since yesterday. I'm taking Actron 400, I ice it, and I rest, but I'm still moving around, even though I have some difficulty walking. Is this correct, or should I do something else? Thank you very much for your opinion!

    • Hello Teresa,

From what you've said, you've taken appropriate measures such as rest and ice. However, given that you're experiencing swelling, pain when walking, and bruising, it would be advisable for a doctor to evaluate your foot in detail to rule out a more serious injury and prescribe the most appropriate treatment and anti-inflammatory medication.
In the meantime, try to limit the load on the affected foot and rest until you receive a professional evaluation.

      Greetings.

    • Bonjour.
