These advances have numerous benefits for the patient and it is necessary to be clear about what they are about and how they differ from each other. In this post, we will mainly talk about two types of minimally invasive operations: endoscopy and arthroscopy.

What is a minimally invasive operation?

Minimally invasive surgery is a surgery in which doctors apply techniques that cause less damage to the body compared to open surgery.. Open surgery involves the surgeon cutting the skin and tissues in order to observe the structures and organs involved, on the contrary, a non-invasive operation is performed with minor incisions and tiny surgical instruments.

Minimally invasive surgery is associated with less pain, a short hospital stay, and fewer complications overall. Among the main types of minimally invasive surgery they find each other:

Endoscopy: It is an exploratory diagnostic method that works through a small camera that is introduced into the body through a natural cavity and that allows internal canals to be visualized on a screen.

Arthroscopy: It is a technique that requires surgical incisions to insert the camera and is indicated for diagnosing and treating joint diseases.

Robotic surgery: This variant involves an operation assisted by robotic tools and allows surgeons to perform complete procedures in a more precise, flexible and controlled manner.

Although these are the three main procedures to perform a minimally invasive operation, each surgery involves a different method and each of them is called in a specific way. For example, laparoscopy is surgery performed in the abdominal cavity, colonoscopy is what allows the large intestine to be explored, and cholecystectomy is what gallbladder surgery is called, among others.

Differences between surgeries using endoscopic and arthroscopic techniques in traumatology

Advanced minimally invasive endoscopy is a procedure that allows the doctor to see inside the patient's body through a camera (endoscope). This device is inserted through a cavity, hollow organ or opening in the body and is attached to a long, thin tube (viewing tube) that the specialist can move and guide inside the body to see the image transmitted on a screen.

The main objectives of endoscopy are:

Have a detailed view of the affected organs.

Accurately diagnose infections.

Treat and prevent diseases.

Perform surgery at a specific point.

Generate less damage from the operation to the patient

Shorten the patient's time in the hospital

Different types of endoscopy can be identified depending on the area of the body in which it is performed. Some of these are:

Arthrocospy: joint endoscopy

Bronchoscopy: endoscopy of the lungs

Colonoscopy: large intestine endoscopy

Ureteroscopy: endoscopy of the urinary system

Anoscopy: endoscopy of the anus

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD): endoscopy of the esophagus, stomach and first part of the small intestine

Laparoscopy: endoscopy of the abdomen or female reproductive system

Laryngoscopy: endoscopy of the larynx

Nasal endoscopy: inside the nose and paranasal sinuses

There is different tools used during an endoscopy. The first and main is the optical system (the camera), called the endoscope. These are thin tubes with a powerful light source and a tiny camera at the end. Depending on the part of the body to be invaded, the endoscope can have different extensions and flexibility. For example, while in a colonoscopy the endoscope is flexible, in a laparoscopy it is rigid.

In addition, an endoscope generally has a channel through which the surgeon inserts tools in order to collect tissue or provide appropriate treatment. The flexible forceps are those that help extract tissue samples, the cytological brush is the one that takes cell samples, and there are other suture extraction forceps.

Pathologies that can be treated by surgery with endoscopy

As we have mentioned, the benefits of endoscopy are several, but above all, the most notable thing is that helps treat different pathologies effectively. In principle, endoscopy was performed only in the esophagus, but with technological advances the mechanism began to be used in other areas of the body. Thanks to endoscopy, different diseases can currently be detected, diagnosed and treated.

Generally speaking, doctors use the method of endoscopy to treat different diseases of the ear, nose, throat, heart, urinary tract, joints and abdomen. Gastrointestinal endoscopy alone, to name one example, can treat different pathologies such as gastroesophageal reflux, obstructions, inflammation, ulcers, celiac disease, Barrett's esophagus or stomach cancer, among others.

Treatment of injuries by minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques

An arthroscopic operation, that is, a minimally invasive surgery that treats pathologies in the joints of the body, only requires one or two small incisions to introduce the camera (arthroscope). There are different types of arthroscopy:

knee arthroscopy

Shoulder arthrocospy

Hand and wrist arthroscopy

hip arthroscopy

Ankle arthroscopy

The benefits of arthroscopic surgery treatment are notable compared to open surgery.to. Thanks to the camera and lighting, the surgeon can observe each joint completely and in detail. Additionally, the risk of complications from arthroscopy is minimal. Not only does the fact that the incisions are small generate a better aesthetic result, but it also makes the hospital stay shorter. Many times the patient can even return home the same day as the surgery.

Pathologies treated with arthroscopy include the presence of loose bone fragments, broken or damaged cartilage, inflammation in the joint linings, torn ligaments and scars. For example, a arthroscopy meniscus operation or arthroscopic meniscectomy It allows meniscus injuries to be repaired without having to open the knee and lasts approximately 30 minutes.

Having a team of professionals who guarantee safe medical treatment is very important for health.
