We interview Ghassan Elgeadi, spinal surgeon orthopedist

On this occasion we interviewed Dr. Ghassan Elgeadi, spine surgeon in Madrid, specialized in treatment of pathologies through minimally invasive surgeries and pioneering techniques such as stem cell treatment.  His work has led him to be a reference and trainer in the area of traumatology. He tells us about his vocation, his studies, and above all of the promising future that technology is offering to patients with back problems.

Why did you decide to become a trauma doctor?

Because it is a specialty that I am passionate about, it allows me to repair and recover patients, in many of them observing practically instantaneous recoveries, as in the case of spine surgery by FESS.

How is a spine surgeon trained?

The training of a spine specialist surgeon is not an easy path, I would say that in short, in a combination of several factors: perseverance, love for the specialty, many hours of study, and above all infinite hours of practice both in laboratories, such as in dissection rooms.

Nowadays, good spine traumatologists in Madrid are scarce because they do not meet all of these requirements, which are important from my point of view.

Dr. Elgeadi attending a training session

Your career has developed as a traumatologist in Madrid, right?

YES starting as a medical student at the autonomous university of Madrid, to later continue my training at the Gregorio Marañón hospital and Hospital Fraternidad Muprespa.

What spine surgeries are most common?

The most common spine surgeries are lumbar disc herniations. The most treated levels being level L4L5 and L5S1. However, given the improvement in technology as well as electronic navigation devices, surgery for cases of canal stenosis increases every day. Back pain is often treated by our units, with ultra-minimally invasive measures.

What are the new trends in spine surgery in Madrid?

We are currently a pioneering team in the treatment of the spine through endoscopic surgery, combining the implantation of regenerative therapies, such as intradiscal stem cells with intradiscal laser technology.

What advantages does stem cell treatment have?

Stem cells, combined with our pioneering spinal treatments, allow us to talk about possible disc regeneration for the first time. The advantages that this combination of treatments allows us to obtain is that we can regenerate, if not all, a large part of the damaged disc, which would allow us to restore both the function of the spine and put an end to its pain.

Traumatologist and spine surgeon, what is the most rewarding thing about your profession?

The most rewarding thing about this specialty of traumatology is that we can cure an illness that affects practically everyone throughout their lives. The symptoms are often disabling.

Do you have a trauma consultation in Madrid?

Yes in several centers. And I will be available to any patient who wants our opinion and treatments.

  1. Good afternoon, I am 60 years old with lumbar osteoarthritis and degenerative discs. L5 is already beginning to touch bone with S1, and parrot beaks are already visible, especially in the dorsal part of the spine.
My question is, in my condition, which exercises I should avoid, since I do yoga and I like to swim and play sports, although I no longer use the bicycle. I also do some weights.
I would like to know what I can or will have to do to cope with this situation, operation... etc.
I live in the Canary Islands but I have a house in Madrid and I can come.
    Thank you

  3. Good afternoon, you treat neuropathic pain due to an incomplete spinal cord injury, caused by hemorrhage, which pressed the spinal cord, and they had to perform a myelectomy on me.

    • Good morning Javier,

      Thanks for your comment.

Indeed, if it is compressing the thecal sac and producing neurological symptoms, it would be advisable to operate. First, both the CT and MRI images would have to be studied. You can request an appointment with our trauma doctors through the link provided.

      All the best.

  5. Hello. I had syringomelia surgery in 2016. The operation was unsuccessful and left me unable to walk. I can only take a few steps, and with assistance. I'm hunched over, and my hands lack muscle mass.
I've asked other neurosurgeons if there's a solution to this, and they say no without looking at anything.

  6. Hello Doctor,

I'm 51 years old and had surgery for a herniated disc at L5-S1 in 2001 and again in 2004, this last time with arthrodesis. I was fine until 2018, but since then, the pain has been getting worse. I've injected hyaluronic acid and corticosteroids into the sacroiliac joint and the arthrodesis area, and I'm still surviving, but the pain is intense, and I can't even move without taking anti-inflammatory drugs. According to my orthopedic surgeon, looking at the last MRI, the two screws on the left side enter the bone almost tangentially, and that, combined with wear over time and the high level of physical activity required by my job, could be causing the pain. The pain is spreading to my lower back, glutes, pyramidalis, etc.

Could removing the screws be a solution? Do you perform that type of operation?

    Greetings
